Dear Friends,
In continued appreciation for your support this year, and as a continuation of last month's newsletter (A Random Thank You), I have some very special news for you.
In a previous post I talked about the importance of consistency when developing an exhibition. In this post I want to talk in broader terms: how consistency can help you be more successful as an artist.
Read MoreI began this painting with an underpainting mixed from Buff Titanium and Neutral Grey 6. I used plenty of water so that it was thin and dripped down the canvas. After the underpainting dried, I began painting large dark shapes with Payne's Grey. I applied these randomly with no pre-planning.

Next week will be the 35th anniversary of the day that I injured my dominant hand so badly I didn't even know if I'd be able to hold a pencil again. I told the doctor on call that day that I was an artist. It is still a very painful memory, and it was the low point of my life. Four years later I graduated #1 in my class in architecture school (it sounds fancy but there were only 13 of us!). I had no idea that I would go on to become an award winning architect, and now a professional artist.
I am calling this video part 1 of Consistency, because I may address other ideas of consistency for artists in other upcoming videos.

Read MoreWhen I began my painting life I had no idea what it meant to paint in a series, and it took many years before I was introduced to the idea. Once I began to embrace the concept, my painting skills quickly began to improve. What does it mean to paint a series? Painting a series is simply painting multiple paintings, one after another, around a common theme. The theme could be color related, composition related, subject matter related, approach related or location related.

Read MoreThe concept of Structure and Spontaneity is something I have talked about before: other posts in this blog, in talks to art groups, and in my abstract painting workshops. It is one of three main concepts that inform how I paint. The other two concepts being Bigger, Faster, Fresher, Looser and Paint First, Then Think.
Read MorePainting from photographs is a very bad habit that many amateur painters and students consistently utilize to make paintings. Photographs can be used effectively as reference material for paintings, however what I see and hear from most of my painting students is that they replicate the photograph completely without first organizing a separate painting composition or value study.
