Don't Wait for Inspiration-Just Show Up

Don't Wait for Inspiration-Just Show Up

I've talked about this topic before because I think it's so important for amateur or beginning painters to understand that you don't need inspiration to paint. My guide is always this famous quote from the great painter Chuck Close: "Amateurs wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get to work."

As a painter my job is to paint. I never think about inspiration because I don't need it to paint. It's great when inspiration comes about, but I don't need it. By showing up everyday in the studio and doing the work, I have ideas to last a lifetime.

Your ideas are waiting for you in your studio. You just have to show up everyday to give the opportunity for ideas to come, to experience the flow of energy from the universe, and stay open to possibilities for new things to happen. You are putting yourself in position to accept ideas and inspiration that come to you.

If you ever feel like you just can't find anything to paint, think about this: You are using the same materials (color, paint, brushes, surfaces) as Rembrandt, Picasso, Matisse, Cezanne and Vermeer. They applied color to a surface with some sort of tool to make paintings - the same way YOU do. YOU ARE DOING THE SAME THING THEY DID! How is that for inspiration?

Show up in the studio, do the work and you'll have ideas to last a lifetime. Don't wait for inspiration - Just show up.
