Improvisational Abstract Painting 2

Improvisational Abstract Painting 2

I’m back this week with another series of (6) paintings on paper, this time in a complementary color combo of green and red. I’m using 140lb. Fabriano Artistico Cold Press Watercolor Paper. As always my paint is Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Paint, and the art crayons are Marabu Art Crayons.

Here are the colors used in these paintings:

  • Jenkin’s Green

  • Titan Green Pale

  • Medium Magenta

  • Titanium White

My concept for these is to keep the paint colors to a minimum so that the color mixing will be minimal. I concentrate on applying the color quickly rather than spending lots of time mixing paint. These are simply practice pieces and aren’t meant to be highly finished paintings.

I begin with some simple line work in green and red, then move into applying my accent color to each piece of paper. In these paintings the accent color is various values of the Medium Magenta and Titanium White mixed together.

I then apply the Jenkin’s Green straight from the jar as my dark value. I place it in close proximity to the accent color to assist in creating the highest value and color contrast there.

I then move on to apply a light middle value color, typically Titanium White mixed with the Titan Green Pale to help complete each painting. I finish with doodles of the green and red Marabu Art Crayons and I’m done. I remove the tape between the 10x10’s to reveal the finished pieces. I like having a white edge on my paper paintings because it acts as a small mat that helps separate it from it’s surroundings.

Give these a try, I think you’ll enjoy the process, and hopefully the results. Have fun and stay loose!
