The Painting of "The Light Within"

I absolutely love this color combination! I haven’t used it for a long time, so I thought to myself, get those warm colors out and have some fun. This piece is painted on 36x36 gallery wrapped linen.

This painting uses an analogous color combination of red-violet, red, red-orange, orange and yellow-orange. Okay and probably yellow too - don’t judge me if I don’t follow all the “rules.”

I did not pre-mix any color on the palette, it was all mixed on the surface of the linen.

The colors of Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Paint used for this painting are:

  • Diarylide Yellow

  • Pyrrole Orange

  • Cadmium Red Medium Hue

  • Medium Magenta

  • Quinacridone Magenta

  • Light Violet

  • Dioxazine Purple

  • Titanium White

As I started to apply the Diarylide Yellow to the surface, it struck me to try and make the area around it really light, like light was coming in from behind or “within” the painting. So, I went with that idea. I know some of you are thinking, “Well, he put that center of interest smack dab in the middle of the painting.”

You’d be just about right (again, don’t judge me!). I believe that following the idea and expressing it spontaneously is more important than the perfect placement of the center of interest, or accent area. I didn’t think about the placement, I simply followed what was in front of me on the surface, trying not to think, only to be spontaneous and intuitive. That’s how I paint. I don’t pre-plan, I go with the flow.

I hope in some way this video will help you. When I was starting out, nothing helped as much as watching someone else paint.
