Which Paint Brush is Best for You?

Which Paint Brush is Best for You?

The question I hear most often from students and from the YouTube crowd is “What kind of brushes do you use?” While it does get old after hearing and answering the question several hundred times, I understand that people want to know.

When I was starting out as a painter 30 plus years ago, I wanted to know what type of brushes my watercolor painting heroes used. Of course I hoped that using the same brushes as them would somehow make me a better painter - of course, it didn’t. Nothing but practice will make you a better painter.

I understand that finding out what type of brushes a painter uses is a place to start, particularly if you are a beginner and have no idea what type of brushes to use. It gives you a brush type with which you can begin to experiment. Keep in mind that it is ONLY a place to start. What I use, or what any other painter may use may not work for you. Lots of students who use the same brushes as me don’t like them.

When you are a beginner, you need to purchase and experiment with many types of brushes to see what you like the best, and to see what works best for you. Everyone has a different way of working in the studio, so the wants, likes and needs of every artist will be different. When I started, I purchased many hundreds of dollars of brushes to see what worked best for me. Once I settled on what worked, I donated the others to a local elementary school.

I play the guitar and am a member of quite a few guitar groups on Facebook. People in these groups ask everyday, ‘What kind of strings are best to use?” It’s hilarious - just the same as paint brushes. My advice to those looking for guitar strings or paint brushes is the same: Buy them all and try them all. It’s absolutely the only way to determine which paint brush works best for you.
