The Painting of "The Spice of Life 3"

The Painting of “The Spice of Life 3”

In this video I am painting an abstract expressionist piece with Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Paint on a 36” square canvas. This painting’s color combination is tetradic, or two sets of complementary colors. The tetradic colors are green and red, violet and yellow.

When using multiple sets of complementary colors, the same basic theories apply as they do with one set of complements. The main thing I keep in mind is always use more of one, and less of the other. In this example, I have used more violet than yellow, and more red than green.

I also followed my standard 5 Step Abstract Painting Process, (I have covered this in multiple videos) which I do in most of my paintings. I did almost very little color mixing before beginning the painting, which is a departure for me.

The Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Paint colors used in this painting:

  • Titanium White

  • Benz Yellow

  • Diarylide Yellow

  • Cadmium Red Medium Hue

  • Quinacridone Magenta

  • Medium Magenta

  • Light Violet

  • Dioxazine Purple

  • Cobalt Turquoise

  • Minty G (a custom mixture)

It’s always fun to paint and see what happens during the painting process. No earth shattering discoveries here, but fun was had, and experience was gained. I’m not sure I can ask for much more.
