Abstract Painting Process-Part 4
This is video 4 in a 6-part series illustrating my abstract painting process from start to finish. You will see me paint this piece in real time. It is spread over 6 videos, but the actual painting sessions are not edited (unless I spend too much time looking without any action), but none of the painting sequences are edited. I am also talking to you the entire time about what I am doing.
I continue laying in middle value color, randomly selecting color from the palette. Because I premixed all my colors and have them all out on the palette, I don’t have to think about whether they go together or not, because I know they do. I know I can then randomly choose them and they will all be harmonious once on the canvas. Note that I mix many of the colors together when I get them on the canvas. I see so many students that have segregated areas of color on the canvas and never mix them together. Don’t be afraid to mix similar colors and values of color together - it helps to integrate all parts of the painting together - plus you come up with some cool color mixes.
I continue to lay in middle value color, looking at the shapes and the values to make sure everything works together. I work all over the surface, so that no area has a chance to dry, and so I am working the composition from all areas at once. If the areas dry you are left with hard edges. If I encounter areas that dry early I simply paint over them with new color.
Finally, I cover the entire surface with color. The bare white canvas is the lightest value surface, so until it is completely covered, I cannot adequately judge my values.
