Title Your Paintings

Title Your Paintings

There must be a fad afoot where artists don't title their paintings - say what? No title? Putting a title on a painting is the easiest part of the painting process. I've heard about elaborate processes and all kinds of weirdness that only artsy people could come up with. I don't use any elaborate process, I just use the first thing that pops into my head - bam, done.

Artists tend to complicate everything, so please keep this light and easy. Don't cop out by not titling your work. How are you going to keep track of your inventory if nothing has a title? Untitled 1, Untitled 2, etc. you say? Come on now, you can do better than that. I thought artists are a creative bunch. Are you telling me you can use all of your creativity to make a beautiful painting, but can't us that same creativity to come up with a title?

Collectors or customers lots of times like to know the title, or get a laugh out of my titles. This helps forge a connection with the customer, which helps with your sales. I always laugh at Wolf Kahn's painting titles because they are so generic - but they work; House in Woods; Purple Barn at Sunset, etc. You get the idea.

Don't be a fad follower. Do what millions of artists have done for centuries: title your paintings.
