Abstract Painting Process-Part 3
In Part 3 of this continuing video series, I begin the painting. I am using an Analogous color combination of red-violet, red (cool), red-orange and orange. The painting is part of a series entitled “Dusk to Dawn.” I am, essentially, playing the warm colors of light against the cool, dark colors of dusk and dawn to impart a certain mood for the piece. You can watch Part 1 Here and Part 2 Here.
Please note that aside from planning my colors I have done no pre-planning for shapes or composition. I am also painting this in real time (the painting segments are not edited). Through the next videos you will see me paint this piece start to finish, using wet paint. The segments were filmed one after another, so the paint is wet and not allowed to dry. I am not painting in dried layers one over another.
In this video I begin laying in my darkest value shapes first. I know that somewhere along this dark value shape I will develop a center of interest - trying to get my darkest values next to my lightest value accent colors so that my centers of interest pop. I then add in my center of interest color. I then begin to work out from the dark value shape adding in cool red and red-violet. I do this quickly so the edges of my dark value shape don’t dry. I keep the edges of my shapes wet so that I can easily manipulate them as I develop the painting.
Right now I am laying in a variety of cool reds and red-violets, keeping in mind my red-violet is dominant and red (cool) is non-dominant.. All I am looking for right now is a good variety of interesting color, value and shapes.
In the next video I will continue laying in color and begin to develop the centers of interest.
