The Painting of "Morning 3"

The Painting of "Morning 3"

"Morning 3" is an acrylic painting completed on a 36" high x 72" long 1-1/2" deep gallery wrapped canvas. This piece is reminiscent of a landscape painting. I imagine it as the morning sun breaking free from the early morning darkness. High contrasts of dark and light values create an implied spatial distance.

The dark value areas are a combination of cool colors played against the consolidated area of warm colors in the "sky" area. The dark value moves from (left to right) violet, to blue-violet, to blue, to blue-green, to green, and finally back into red violet. The warm colors move from (left to right) yellows into oranges, then into pinks and red violets. I also interspersed just a bit of subtle blue and blue-green into the warms to provide needed contrast. The color scheme is simply a combination of all complementary colors played against each other. Most of the cool, dark value areas contain very thick, glossy paint. This is again in contrast to the warm color areas which are typically put on in thinner paint.

The colors used are Hansa Yellow Light, Indian Yellow, Fluorescent Pink, Fluorescent Magenta, Light Pink, Cadmium Orange, Pyrrol Orange, Quinacridone Magenta, Light Violet, Permanent Violet, Dioxazine Purple, Lavender (custom mixture), Azalea (custom mixture), Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Viridian, Sap Green, Cobalt Turquoise, Minty Green (custom mixture) and Titanium White.
